Review: Tower of Guns (Microsoft Xbox One)

April 21, 2015

FPS/Indie/Microsoft Xbox One/Roguelike/Tower of Guns/Xbox One review

I’ve played a lot of crazy games but I think I can crown a new winner for the most crazy one of all. Tower of Guns is a quick paced roguelike FPS Bullet Hell that puts crazy weapons in the player’s hands to shoot at anything that moves. Bringing back…

Film review: Shield of Straw (DVD)

crime fiction/film/film review/Shield of Straw/Takashi Miike/thriller

Takashi Miike is one of the most prolific and transgressive of Japan’s modern cinema directors. Best known for 13 Assassins, Dead or Alive (no, it has nothing to do with the games), and Ichi the Killer, Miike likes indulging in a spot of the old ultraviolence and in-out (I do…

Review: Tabletop Gallery (Nintendo Wii U)

board game/casual games/dice game/digital board game/Nintendo Wii U/Reviews/Tabletop Gallery/Wii U Review

I love board games. I spend a lot of time playing them, and then spend a lot of time playing digital board games. My iPad, especially, has such a range of board games on it that I don’t even need friends any more (but seriously, friends, don’t leave me!). Related…

Interview: Screen Cheat is coming to PS4!

April 20, 2015

Indie/Interview/Interviews/Samurai Punk/Screen Cheat/screencheat

Screencheat was one of our favourite PC games from last year. As a multiplayer-only game it provided all of the necessary elements for a quality, classic local multiplayer experience; tight mechanics, well-balanced gameplay, and an entertaining concept that would allow competitive players to really get stuck into it. The basic…

Film review: Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno (Blu-Ray)

April 20, 2015

action/film/film review/historical epic/Historical Fantasy/Keishi Ohtomo/Rurouni Kenshin

The Rurouni Kenshin series of films is what 47 Ronin should have been. Stripped of the formula that marks a Hollywood period film, and replaced with an actual understanding of the Japanese culture and philosophy (as you would hope, given that it is a film native to Japan), Rurouni Kenshin…

It’s undeniable that the retro gaming aesthetic is a major force in gaming. Tapping into the nostalgia for simplicity and pixels, developers, from the indies right through to the big publishers, are investing in games that appeal to that specific community. And that’s what two industry veterans, Mike Kennedy and…

Review: Guac’ a Mole (Nintendo Wii U)

April 20, 2015

arcade games/Guac' a Mole/Indie/Nintendo Wii U/Reviews/Wii U Review

Who doesn’t like Whack A Mole? One of the truly classic arcade games, Whack A Mole gives players a little hammer to thump moles on the head as they pop up out of the machine? The goal is as simple as tallying up as many points as possible as a…

Review: MLB 15 The Show (Sony PlayStation Vita)

Baseball/MLB 15 The Show/MLB: The Show/Reviews/Sony PlayStation TV/sports game/Vita Review

Having recently visited America, I did my best to appreciate a lot of the culture that yells “AMERICA”. And while I certainly enjoyed a lot of it (I already am a huge fan of ice hockey), the Americans certainly made baseball, an otherwise interesting twist on cricket (a sport that,…

When it was released in 2004, the PlayStation Portable was the new shining toy for the cool dude. The first handheld in the PlayStation line of gaming consoles by Sony, the PSP, just like its console siblings, has had a healthy run and a surprisingly balanced library. There was something…

Review: Football Manager Classic 2015 (Apple iPad)

April 17, 2015

Football Manager/Football Manager Classic 2015/iPad Review/manager game/Reviews/Sega/simulation

People often criticise the annual updates for sports franchises. “Why buy FIFA each year?!?” they proclaim with the righteousness that so characterises ‘gamer’ community, suggesting that their taste in games makes it apparently impossible to comprehend that other people might in fact have their own reasons to enjoying – and…
