Lost in Cult's publishing launch line-up, including Immortality, The Excavation of Hob's Barrow, and Thank Goodness You're Here!

Lost in Cult — best known for its Design Works series of game art books — has announced it is expanding into physical game publishing. This new label is built on the pillars of prestige, preservation, and curation; it promises to be a bold entry into the world of physical games. Its launch line-up features three beloved titles for PlayStation 5 and/or Nintendo Switch, each available in a collector-focused edition (labelled EDITIONS) and a standard retail edition.

The first wave of games includes the Best Narrative BAFTA-winning interactive film Immortality for PlayStation 5, folk horror standout The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow for Nintendo Switch, and the BAFTA-nominated comedy adventure game Thank Goodness You’re Here for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch.  I reviewed Immortality for DDNet, awarding it five out of five stars, and Matt reviewed The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow for DDNet, giving it four stars.

“Collaborating with Lost in Cult has been nothing short of a delight — their attention to detail and their drive to keep adding more and more to everything they put out is evident in the quality of what they release,” says Immortality developer (and my personal favourite developer since Her Story) Sam Barlow in a press release. “Each new treasure they create feels like a genuine companion piece, not just a ‘nice to have.’ The most common request we’ve had since releasing Immortality has been for a physical edition, but we always knew that if we did do it, we’d need to do it right — and so, working with Lost in Cult on this amazing new series was a no brainer!”

Every EDITIONS release includes an exclusive outer slipcase with original commissioned artwork and a variant cover of the retail case inside, a developer signature card, a set of art cards, a fold-out poster, a collector’s checklist, and a prestige booklet containing developer interviews and analytical essays. All-new artwork is also featured across the packaging and the mailer box, with three rotating designs.

“We’re being bold. I can unashamedly say we set out to create a new standard for physical games,” says Ryan Brown, Head of Publishing at Lost In Cult. ” And this is a multi-faceted mission. Our EDITIONS are designed to preserve not just the game, but the story and artistry behind its creation. At the same time, our retail releases ensure no one is locked out of owning great games physically, giving everyone a chance to play their favourites for the decades to come, internet connection willing or not.”

Retail distribution is backed by PM Studios, which has launched physical editions for games such as Black Myth: Wukong. The retail additions will be widely available online and in-store, but all EDITIONS are only sold through the Lost in Cult website. The EDITIONS are limited in quantity; for example, there will be 1,500 copies of Immortality for PlayStation 5, 3,000 copies of The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow for Nintendo Switch, and 1,500 PlayStation 5 copies plus 3,000 Nintendo Switch copies of Thank Goodness You’re Here!

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
