The game that got me looking at Odencat was Fishing Paradiso, which was an absolute pleasure to review many, many moons ago. Now, the Japanese developer has announced that its acclaimed 2023 RPG Meg’s Monster will launch on smartphones this May, with pre-registration available on both the App Store and the Play Store.
Meg’s Monster has been optimized for mobile devices: it will natively run on a vertical screen with tap controls. The recent Lost Memories DLC will be included, allowing players to experience stories from other characters as well. This version is free-to-play with ads, with an optional in-app purchase to remove ads. There are also “sponsor” purchases available (Platinum Support, Gold Support, Silver Support, and Bronze Support) that give players mobile-exclusive perks to support the developers. There are also in-app purchases for Prequel: Lost Memory, Final Chapter: Ending Rewriten, and something called a Complete Pack, which I would guess includes ad removal, the prequel, and the ending rewrite.
The game’s concept is “if she cries, the world dies.” You play as Roy, a nearly invincible monster with 99,999 HP. However, while he’s effectively impossible to kill, it’s the other character that you need to watch out for. Meg is a little girl who absolutely cannot stand seeing her guardian injured. As he takes damage, her mental state declines, and if it reaches zero, she’ll cry, instantly destroying the entire world. It’s up to Roy and another monster, Golan, to keep the girl happy by giving her toys and gifts (and trying to avoid getting damaged as much as possible). It is a unique and reflective approach to JRPG combat.
“As Meg’s Monster heads into its third anniversary, we are delighted to announce the mobile version!” says Ryota, an Odencat Developer, in a press release. “Not only is it more accessible to play with tap controls, but we’ve also focused on displaying the action in portrait mode to make it enjoyable even during spare time. The controls and visual feel have changed significantly, so we hope both new players and those already familiar with the story will take this opportunity to play again.”
Developed and self-published by Odencat, Meg’s Monster will be released for iOS/Android in May. It is currently available for PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One.
