Review: God Of War (Sony PlayStation 4)

April 12, 2018

action/Action Adventure/action game/god of war/PlayStation 4/PS4 Review/Reviews/Sony/Sony Santa Monica

Review by Brad L. God of War has been one of those series that I just could not get into. With previous games, despite offering fast-paced action akin to what makes PlatinumGames titles so special, I couldn’t relate to the narratives whatsoever. Kratos was painted as a tough, merciless character,…

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle lands its first English dub trailer

Arc System Works/BlazBlue/BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle/News/trailer/Trailers

News by Matt S. I’m going to get this upfront: I have grave concerns about the roster of BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle. I mean, one of the games it crosses over with is Persona 4 Arena, in which Risette is a playable character (in Ultimax, the sequel), and instead the…

Review: Gal*Gun 2 (Nintendo Switch)

April 11, 2018

fan service/Gal*Gun/Gal*Gun 2/Inti Creates/Nintendo Switch/rails shooter/Reviews/Shooter/shooters/Switch Review

Review by Matt S. Have you ever read Georges Bataille’s work? Particularly his novel Story of the Eye? If not, it’s a useful way to understand and interpret a game like Gal*Gun 2. In fact, Gal*Gun 2 is the perfect example of so much of Bataille’s work and philosophy in…

Embargoes are becoming too restrictive

April 11, 2018

embargoes/Opinion

Opinion by Matt S. To do our jobs as games critics, we often need to get access to a game ahead of its release date. Else we’re reviewing it after it has been released, and that’s not helpful to readers who are really keen on doing some reading up about…

Square Enix has patched the PC port of Chrono Trigger to fix it

April 11, 2018

Chrono Trigger/JRPG/News/PC/Square Enix

News by Matt S. Square Enix recently released a port of Chrono Trigger to PC that was… controversial, to say the least. The company had made a number of changes to the game – most signficicantly, messing with the game’s art to make it “HD” – and that didn’t exactly…

Atelier Lydie & Suelle/Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings/character cross over/DLC/Everybody's Golf/News

News by Matt S. Well, here’s a collaboration I would never have guessed at. Gust’s Atelier Lydie & Suelle is a delightful JRPG about two girls and their dreams to become master alchemists. And, apparently, they play a mean game of golf, with a special collaboration event with Everybody’s Golf.…

Review: Titan Quest (Sony PlayStation 4)

April 10, 2018

action RPG/Diablo clone/PlayStation 4/PS4 Review/Reviews/RPG/THQ Nordic/Titan Quest

Review by Matt S. Let’s talk about Diablo clones. It’s rare for a game to be so influential that it becomes a genre title in itself, but that’s certainly the case for Diablo. That original masterpiece, released far back in 1996, has joined the ranks of the likes of Rogue…

Review: Regalia – Of Men And Monarchs (Sony PlayStation 4)

April 10, 2018

Indie/JRPG/PlayStation 4/PS4 Review/Regalia - Of Men and Monarchs/Reviews/Tactics RPG

Review by Matt S. I didn’t really want to sit down and write this review of Regalia. Doing so is going to take hours out of my life and… the game’s just not worth it. But in the interests of being professional, here we go: there’s nothing outright wrong with…

Horror/Indie/News/noir/psychological horror/The Piano/trailer/Trailers

News by Matt S. There have been some truly horrible attempts at bringing the noir literary genre to video games, and yet I continue to hold out hope that each new “noir” game really nails it. The next attempt at doing noir in video game form is the psychological horror…
