The key art for Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream.

Today’s Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Direct highlights Mii character creation with new customization parts, island building, player-created items, and more. It also announces a mid-April launch date. This is the first new entry in the Tomodachi Life series in more than 10 years.

I’m going to get the big question out of the way first: Will the game allow for same-sex marriages? The answer is yes! There is also a non-binary option. I suppose Nintendo learned its lesson following this catastrophe in 2014.

Here is a description of the game, via Nintendo:

In the Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream game, players can create Mii characters based on family, friends and anyone they can imagine, and have them inhabit a vibrant, eclectic island where almost anything can happen. Customize Mii characters right down to their personalities, little quirks and living spaces, then see what weird and wonderful things they’ll get up to. Give them an occasional nudge to divulge what’s on their minds, help them solve life’s problems, cultivate their friendships and more. In this game, time passes the same way as the real world, so try to drop in on your Mii characters daily as they continue to live their best island lives!

In the game, players can customize and envision Mii characters however they’d like: friends, family, rock stars, etc. The experience will vary depending on the island’s resident Miis. There are two ways to create Mii Characters. Get Help asks questions about their facial features, while in From Scratch, players choose from various face types, hairstyles, and eyes. There is even a face paint option! After either of these steps, customize their name, height, body type, gender, voice, and personality traits. Traits include their quirkiness, their energy levels, and more. There are more ways than ever to customize Miis: choose a pose they may strike, how they like their food, or have them toss and turn in their sleep. Players can also give Miis favourite phrases.

Once they come into existence, Miis need help to begin their lives. Bring residents together by dropping Miis near each other to see what plays out. For example, they could discuss favourite foods or bond over their love of monster trucks. After they’ve been introduced, Miis will interact with each other without player intervention. Up to eight residents can share a home, and some unexpected drama may occur in the common areas.

There are lots of shops and facilities available on the island. Here is the list, via Nintendo:

  • Help Miis discover their favourite eats and culinary curiosities at Fresh Kingdom food mart.
  • Pick up a range of everyday attire and out-there outfits at Where & Wear clothing.
  • Revamp rooms and living spaces at T&C Reno home supply (there are even rooms for Miis who dream of sleeping in a supermarket or a library!).
  • Shop for reasonably priced items that change depending on the time of day at the Marketplace.
  • Gather island decorations at Quik Build amenities.
  • Tune into the MNN news station to keep up with the Miis and everyday happenings on the island.
  • Stage a fun photo op for Miis at Foto-Tomo photography.

Palette House Workshops lets players’ creativity bloom. Design pets, create custom drinks, sketch a favourite TV show, decorate an item of clothing, draw the exterior of a house or grand tiles, and create all sorts of original items. There are other ways to change the island’s aesthetic: landscape items! Decorate with landscape items, such as trees, plants, benches, vending machines, bouncy playground rides, and more. Move around shops and houses, and expand your land area for more room to grow.

Developed and published by Nintendo, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Direct will be released for Nintendo Switch on April 16. It will also be playable on Switch 2, though there is no separate edition or upgrade.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
