Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja have dropped a large amount of new details regarding Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake. They also announced a new demo for the game, dropping in March, roughly a week pre-launch. But wait, there’s more! There’s a collaboration with Silent Hill f, and, to top it all off, a new trailer featuring music by popular artist Tsuki Amano was unveiled.

Here is a brief description of the game, via Koei Tecmo:

In Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake, twin sisters wander into an abandoned village infested with wraiths, and use the Camera Obscura, which has the ability to capture and contain the impossible, as their only weapon. This complete remake of the second title in the PROJECT ZERO (FATAL FRAME) franchise will introduce new gameplay elements, including a brand-new ending featuring the song “Utsushie”, composed by Tsuki Amano, along with new side stories and new locations to explore.

Players can use Broken Spirit Stones to delve into characters’ pasts and discover new side stories. Explore new locations, like the Umbral Mound, a burial site bound with ropes and hidden within bamboo groves.

As the player learns more about the haunted village’s mystery, battles will become more terrifying than ever, with evil spirits sprouting wings and growing more frantic — and far more dangerous. While in this state, spirits are shrouded in crimson malice, allowing them to regenerate health and attack more (and more powerfully). To defeat the spirits, players use prayer beads to enhance the Camera Obscura. This increases the number of focus points and improves the reload speed. Reversion Beads can be found throughout the game and used to help reset all unlocked upgrades.

The Camera Obscura takes standard shots and new Special Shots. What happens with the Special Shot depends on the filter, as each has unique effects. Here are two examples. The Paraceptual Filter allows players to use the Special Shot Binding, which binds the target and allows them to escape. The Radiant Filter uses the Special Shot Purging, which inflicts significant damage proportional to the amount of Mio’s willpower charged.

The Camera Obscura is also used to photograph Twin Dolls scattered across the village. These Dolls, modelled after the Twin Maidens, are guardians against calamity. By photographing them together in one frame, they become purified and allowed to rest. The more Twin Dolls purified, the more items are available in the Point Exchange. A new photo mode allows players to capture in-game moments using frames, stickers, and visual effects.

The collaboration with Silent Hill f brings costumes from that game to Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake. These costumes will be free DLC and arrive in a future game update. More details will be announced in the coming weeks.

As a bonus, players who digitally pre-order the game before March 12 will get the Spirit Charm, Cat Ears (White), and Cat Eats (Black), plus two outfits inspired by the original game.

Developed by Team Ninja and published by Koei Tecmo, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake will be released for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series on March 12. The demo will launch March 5. Silent Hill f is available for PC via Steam/Epic/Microsoft, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series.
