Square Enix has dropped a massive amount of information about the upcoming turn-based RPG remake Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, including details on its visuals, story, features, characters, and battle systems. It also announced three DLC packs, a Digital Deluxe Edition, and a physical Collector’s Edition. That’s a lot, so there’s no time to waste — let’s get started!
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is a remake of the 2000 PlayStation game Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. The story begins as youthful curiosity that unfolds into an epic adventure to save the world. Here is its description and key features, via Square Enix:
On the sleepy shores of Estard Island, our bright-eyed protagonist and his best friend stumble upon strange fragments of an ancient tablet. When they place the fragments into a pedestal within a mysterious shrine, a magical light transports them to an unknown world. With every new tablet they discover, the world around them grows. What begins as a quest for answers soon turns into something far greater as they discover malevolent forces and the hidden, true nature of their world.
- Collecting the fragments to complete a tablet unlocks the gateway to a new world!
- The adventure unfolds as the group travels between two worlds. Each tablet they discover leads them to exciting new destinations.
- Many unique events and side stories take place in each world.
- The user interface design has also been reimagined, now featuring a tab-based menu system, so all the information is easier than ever to access.
- The game offers plenty of content for those looking to take a break from the main story, such as a battle arena featuring a host of formidable legendary foes, and the classic Lucky Panel minigame. Both provide excellent opportunities to obtain rare items!
Square Enix describes the visual redesign as “a charming hand-crafted 3D art style reminiscent of miniature figurines.” The towns, environments, and dungeons share the aesthetic and feature a diorama-inspired design. The dramatic event scenes have also been recreated using this distinctive style.
The six characters of the main party grew up on an island nestled in the ocean. They travel between two worlds. As they journey, they will meet people who will want to help along the way. Here are brief descriptions of each of the main characters, via Square Enix:
- Protagonist (The Player): A boy from Pilchard Bay, a fishing village on Estard Island. Though he leads a peaceful life as a fisherman’s son, he often wonders what lies beyond the sea.
- Kiefer: The prince of Estard, his family has long governed the island and its people. Highly inquisitive and proactive, he races around the island with the protagonist to uncover the world’s mysteries.
- Maribel: Though she’s always looking to get her own way, she’s a sweet girl below the surface. All the same, she has no intention of letting her childhood friends, the protagonist and Kiefer, go on an adventure without her
- Ruff: A cheerful, pure-hearted boy who is always accompanied by a wolf. Though sometimes naive, he possesses sharp, animal-like instincts.
- Aishe: A young Roamer woman devoted to the Earth Spirit, determined to restore the Almighty. Skilled in swordsmanship, she is also gifted with a natural talent for dance.
- Sir Mervyn: A member of the Holy Order of the Almighty, he once fought the Demon King alongside the very deity he worships. Skilled in a variety of sword techniques, he still possesses the skills that earned him the title of hero.
The “reimagined” in Dragon Quest VII Reimagined doesn’t just refer to the graphics. In the revamped battle system, the party members’ spells and abilities have evolved, and so have the monsters’ appearances and behaviours. These changes create more dynamic battles. Players can now attack weaker enemies without having to enter battle, instantly defeating them. The turn-based battle system allows tactics to be set up so combat proceeds without pausing for turns. The battle speed can be adjusted, and an auto-battle option has been added.
Vocations offer unique spells and abilities for battle. The protagonist and party members can master a variety of vocations and can change vocations after a certain point in the story. Moonlight allows characters to have two vocations at once. During battles, characters get “worked up” until they “let loose” their vocation’s Perk. Some Perks boost attacks, while others provide party support. There’s a new Monster vocation with the perk of “Positive Reinforcement,” which summons monsters to assault your enemies.
Three paid DLC packs will be available at launch. In The Road of Regal Wretches, challenge foes from the Erdrick Trilogy in a battle arena format to earn valuable rewards. Luminary’s Livery gives players a costume set that allows them to dress as the cast from Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age. The costume set includes Luminary’s Livery, Spiky Sidekick’s costume, Red Sisterly Smock, Green Sisterly Smock, Fully Fabulous Finery, Warrior Princess Wardrobe, and Auld Rogue’s outfit. The third DLC pack, Jam-Packed Swag Bag, gives players a head start on their adventure. It includes adorable slime-themed equipment (a sword, a boomerang, and a stick), accessories that boost experience and gold (a Metal Slime Heart and a Gold Golem Heart), and useful consumable items (9x Medicinal Herb, 3x Single Phial, 1x Seed of Strength, 1x Seed of Resilience, and 1x Seed of Life)
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined’s Digital Deluxe Edition includes the base game, the three DLC packs listed above, 48 hours of early access, and a White Wolf costume for Ruff. The physical Collector’s Edition includes the base game, the three DLC packs, the White Wolf costume, a SteelBook case, a medium Dragon Quest smile slime plush, and a ship in a bottle figure.
There are a variety of bonuses for Dragon Quest VII Reimagined. The early bird bonus, for players who pre-purchase the game, includes Trodain Togs (an appearance-changing costume that allows the protagonist to resemble the Hero from Dragon Quest VIII) and three Seeds of Proficiency (which increases the proficiency of a select vocation). There are also platform-exclusive bonuses, which unfortunately only apply to digital versions of the game. Nintendo players will receive a Red Slime Shield, PlayStation players will receive a Blue Slime Shield, Steam players will receive a Silver Slime Shield, and Microsoft players will receive a Green Slime Shield. Finally, there is a special bonus for players who have save data from Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake: an agility ring.
Developed by Hexadrive/Square Enix, and published by Square Enix, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined will be released worldwide for PC via Steam/Microsoft, PlayStation 5, Switch 2, Switch, and Xbox Series on February 5, 2026.
