Today, Free Style announced it would launch its multiplayer tag game OBAKEIDORO 2: Chase & Seek to Switch 2 and Switch worldwide this August. The game was originally launched in Japan for Switch 2 last October, and its worldwide release is its first Switch version. Enter an eerie world inspired by Japanese legends for a game of cat-and-mouse. Play alone or team up with friends. The character design is scary-cute, making the game great for all horror tolerance levels.

Online matches support up to eight players. The game is played in three-minute rounds, with the player being a Monster (one or two players) or a Human (three to six players). If the monsters put everyone in jail before the time limit, they win. If even one Human evades capture, the Humans win. Monsters have unique traits and skills; some can pass through walls, go really fast, or capture Humans using powerful attacks. Humans need teamwork to survive.

Here are the game’s key features, via Free Style:

  • Asymmetric Cooperative Battles – Play as a Monster or work together as Humans to survive and evade capture across various eerie stages reminiscent of historic Japanese settings.
  • Fast-Paced, Accessible Matches – With simple controls and quick three-minute rounds, it’s the perfect casual party game.
  • Effortless Local Play – Use the Nintendo Switch 2 Game Share feature to invite friends to play, even if they don’t own the software.

Here are the game’s six modes, via Free Style:

  • Quick Match – An online battle mode with players from around the world. The available maps rotate every hour, changing up the gameplay experience. Eight-player matches are held at specific times.
  • Room Match – Play online in private rooms. You can restrict entry with a password or gather friends by sharing the Room ID.
  • Join Friends – Jump straight into the action with friends who are already playing online. This supports both Quick Match and Room Match, letting you join your friends’ sessions directly.
  • Single-Player Chase & Seek – A solo mode where you can enjoy the game at your own pace. This is the best mode for earning Coins, the in-game currency used to unlock new Monsters and Lanterns.
  • Local Party Chase & Seek – A local multiplayer mode for up to eight players using multiple Nintendo Switch systems. Create a private room and face off via local wireless communication.
  • Split-Screen Chase & Seek – A couch cooperative/versus mode for up to four players on a single system. The screen splits into four, allowing families and friends to laugh and play together in the same room.

Developed and published by Free Style, OBAKEIDORO 2: Chase & Seek will be released worldwide for Switch 2 and Switch on August 6.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
