The immersive, story-driven school life RPG Varlet will be released in one month, but until today, there has only been a single trailer showing it off. In the game, monsters are replacing students who show too much attention-seeking behaviour. It challenges players to explore the duality of their own nature. Today, Developer AQURIA and publisher FuRyu finally revealed Varlet’s second trailer.

Kousei Academy is the first school to implement Johari, a cross-reality, virtual reality network. It can be used for everything from finding basic information to purchasing items to social networking. Since the app has become part of the high school experience, there has been a noticeable increase in its users’ desire for approval and attention-seeking behaviour. An urban legend starts spreading; allegedly, users are disappearing into otherworldly “Glitches” when their desires become too strong. Monsters that inhabit the Glitches are rumoured to replace real-world users, so nobody has even noticed people are going missing.

Varlet’s protagonist learns the urban legend is real, and some students have already been replaced. They are a member of the Student Support Services guild dedicated to solving the school’s problems—and this one is a whopper! Players guide their friends, strengthening bonds and fighting to protect Kousei Academy. But unexpected consequences will occur if you get too close to too many people…

Varlet’s core is its Triad Stats system. It shapes character progression based on the player’s choices. Six attributes are divided between Light and Dark Trial traits, and these influence dialogue options and passive battle skills. Light Triad stats emphasize morality, sympathy, and altruism; Dark Triad stats are about Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and narcissism. Players can be a guiding, uplifting leader who empowers allies… or a ruthless ruler with immense power at a personal cost.

Developed by AQURIA and published by FuRyu, Varlet will be released for PC via Steam/Epic, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch on August 28.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
