The key art for Touhou Luna Nights.

Touhou Project games lean toward the bullet hell genre, mostly because that’s what Touhou originally was. Since its inception, it’s spawned over a dozen titles by the game’s developer. The original developer places few restrictions on his original content, so the game’s success has also resulted in a lot of fan-made works, games of many genres included. For example, last month I wrote about Touhou Mystia’s Izakaya – a cozy restaurant sim set in the Touhou world. A popular fan game over the past few years has been Touhou Luna Nights, a 2D exploration-heavy Metroidvania. Already available on several platforms, the game is now set to launch on PlayStation late this month.

Touhou Luna Nights was first released in Early Access for PC via Steam in 2018, with a full launch in 2019. It came to Xbox One in September 2020, and Nintendo Switch a little over three months later. Still… no PlayStation. For those eagerly awaiting a version they could play, days turned to months turn to years. Now we’re here in 2024, and it is finally time.

Touhou Luna Nights is set in a world full of strange places and strange youkai. Its protagonist is a recurring Touhou Project character, Sakuya Izayoi. Remelia Scarlet is the head vampire of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, and Sakuya is her maid. Sakuya is sent to a world that seems like Gensokyo, but something just isn’t quite the same. And it won’t be easy to find a way out.

Sakuya has the ability to stop time and has mad skills with throwing knives. The game features the staple Touhou Graze system, allowing players to avoid enemy attacks just in time to restore HP and MP. Sakuya’s voyage won’t be easy, as many stand in her way: Touhou protagonist Reimu Hakurei, Marisa Kirisame, Remelia and her sister, and other familiar characters will show up.

Here’s an older trailer, announcing the PlayStation versions of Touhou Luna Nights:

The developer released a statement regarding the upcoming PlayStation version of the game, saying, “To everyone who’s ever asked for a PS release over the years… Thank you so much for waiting. We’re finally officially releasing a PS version of the game. You can say this game is Team Ladybug’s ‘origin,’ and we hope that more players can enjoy this game which has a special place in our heart.”

Developed by Team Ladybug and published by Playism, Touhou Luna Nights will be released for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on January 25. It is currently available for PC, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
