So. Many. Games.

A key graphic for Intel presents Future Games Show Summer Showcase.

Another showcase that starts with the word “future!” This time, though, it’s hosted by Spider-Man and Mary Jane Watson. Well, kind of – the hosts are voice actors Yuri Lowenthal and Laura Bailey. This showcase lasts about 50% longer than most (it’s an hour and a half) but does take good long looks at some games. So let’s get started with some of the best highlights of the show, which I’ll follow with a full list of the games mentioned as well as the entire show’s video if you’d like to take a look.

Game highlights

Resistor

It would be reasonable to describe Resistor as a CaRPG (get it? car-RPG!) since it is an open-world narrative-driven (ha) adventure RPG. It features exploration, stunt-infused racing, and explosive vehicular combat. It’s 2060 and the world’s governments have destroyed one another, leaving only self-contained city states run by huge corporations. Within those walls, people life comfortably and with excess, completely removed from the harsh realizes of the outside world. The corporations take turns hosting an annual racing tournament, with the prize being citizenship. But it’s not all as great as it sounds… Resistor will be released for PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series “soon.”

Headbangers

Headbangers seems just delightful, happy and musical… and weird. I’m in, full stop. Like some of us, I’m tired of battle royale games, but this one is different: it’s rhythm-based! You and 29 other pigeons compete to complete the quest of claiming the title of Master Headbanger. Compete in musical mini-games; there are 23 of them across four rounds. Each round escalates in difficulty. Pigeons can be customized with clothing, hats, glasses, voices, taunts, and more. Headbangers will be released for PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series later this year.

Distant Bloom

The goal of Distant Bloom is to take the world from ruins to a world in bloom. It is a serene management game that lets you explore an alien planet where things have clearly gone awry. Use plants to restore the environment, and build a flourishing community with your crewmates. Turn harvests into recipes, tools, and items that can be used to improve home base. Distant Bloom will be released for PC “soon.”

Ruffy and the Riverside

Ruffy and the Riverside has this really cool “SWAP” features, which is basically copy and paste. In this open world action adventure game, use SWAP to magically change the world around you. Play as Ruffy, the Chosen One, as they try to save Riverside from the lunatic villain Groll (and his henchmen). There is lots to do, from main quests to side quests to exploration. Ruffy and the Riverside will be released for PC and Nintendo Switch in Q1 2024; other consoles TBA.

Fretless: The Wrath of Riffson

Yep, another game about music. This one isn’t a rhythm title though, no; Fretless: The Wrath of Riffson is a turn-based RPG where players wield powerful instruments, gather mighty riff attacks, and save the land from Rick Riffson’s devilish goons and musical monsters. Play as Rob, a friendly musician trying to restore harmony to a world where whacky villains are corrupting music. Explore the land, add sick riffs to your deck, and wield your mighty guitar in epic music battles. Fretless: The Wrath of Riffson will be released for PC in 2024.

The full showcase

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
