During yesterday’s Nintendo Direct, LEVEL-5 announced a December release date for its upcoming puzzle game, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam. It will be available digitally, with physical copies available only in Japan and only for Switch 2/Switch. The game is set one year after Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, in an American town called Steam Bison. It has even surpassed London with its developments powered by steam technology.
Professor Layton and the New World of Steam has been long in the making, with an original launch target of 2024 and multiple delays since.
As always, the game’s cast of characters is led by Professor Hershel Layton and Luke Tritton. Professor Layton is a leading authority on puzzles and is known across London for solving mysteries with his assistant, Luke—at least, that was the case until one year ago. Luke moved to America due to family circumstances, but his love of puzzles remains as strong as ever, and the folks around town call him Great Detective Luke.
There is a lengthy list of secondary characters. Bolt Allinston is the richest man in town; he serves on the town’s governing body, the Gilded Council. Elinora and Elida Allinston are Bolt’s twin daughters; one is mechanically inclined while the other is a stage actress. Eggmuffin Sonder is the town’s leading inventor; he has been instrumental in Steam Bison’s rapid growth. Sheriff Bobsley is fully devoted to keeping the town safe; unfortunately, he is quick to act and slow to think. Falcon is an eagle who is offended by being mistaken for a vulture; he spends his time gathering treasures. And Mystella runs the town’s fortune-telling house; she keeps track of the puzzles that Layton and his companions have yet to solve.
Developed and published by LEVEL-5, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam will be released for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Switch 2, and Switch on December 10.
