During BitSummit Mixtape, a launch date for fantasy adventure game Veritas Tales: Witch of the Dark Castle was revealed alongside a new gameplay-focused trailer. The book-style game is in the spirit of The NeverEnding Story and that era of fantasy films. The trailer gives you a taste of the roots of the fantasy that the developers love today — the texture and feel of that era, brought to life through the look and touch of paper and books. Veritas Tales: Witch of the Dark Castle is scheduled to launch for PC this July.

Veritas Tales: Witch of the Dark Castle drops you into the book, and your choices create branching narratives. Every choice made and every roll of the dice changes how the world responds to you. Face down enemies if you choose; you may carry a sword in hand, but you can also ignore them and walk on by.

The game has been created over six years, with developer Yoshio Nishimura (Odin Sphere, Dragon’s Crown, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim) residing in a remote Japanese mountain village and working diligently on the 300+ hand-drawn illustrations. There was no generative AI at any stage. There are about 15K words written, with an estimated playtime of 20 hours.

Developed by Digitalis Publishing and published by 15 Industry, Veritas Tales: Witch of the Dark Castle will be released for PC via Steam on July 9. It will support Japanese, Simplified Chinese, and English.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
