DeerFarm and CFK have revealed details about the five bosses in their upcoming fantasy bullet-hell shoot ‘em up, Shikhondo: Blue Pieta. Each stage is represented by its own boss, and each boss has their own backstory. Shikhondo: Blue Pieta is the follow-up to 2024’s Shikhondo: Youkai Rampage, but this time it is a side-scrolling game, a first for the series. The game is set in a foreign city, and a rookie grim reaper and a vampire hunter cross paths. Shikhondo: Blue Pieta is set to launch for PC later this month.

The five bosses include a spirit, a human, a witch, a fairy… and something with no name at all.

Stage 1 – Spirit of the Flower: The first thing to stand between the protagonists and the city is the Spirit of the Flower. It is deceptively cute, but something is surprising underneath all the flora.

Stage 2 – Sister Maria: She is the first human boss in the history of the series. She appears in a subway station. There are no yokai and no fantastical creatures, just a single person.

Stage 3 – The Three Witches: She first appears in the grand hall of a European manor as one person, but in the second phase, the body comes apart into three sisters.

Stage 4 – Tooth Fairy: Tooth Fairy is the owner of an amusement park. The sweetness of the name mixes well with the unhinged energy of a theme park. The boss has two scary-looking dental tools flying around it.

Stage 5 – Unknown: It has no name. It waits at the clock tower. This creature escaped in the previous game, with this confrontation planned.

The fives bosses are shown below, in order of stage:

While every Shikhondo game to date has scrolled vertically, Shikhondo: Blue Pieta takes on side-scrolling. The bullet patterns are built around it. Soul Collect is back, where you graze bullets to fill the Soul Gauge and trigger Soul Collect Mode. When this happens, every bullet on screen converts to score pickups, with the multiplier at 2x. If you still have a bomb, you can push it to a second stage with a 4x multiplier, attacks boosted on top. When you take a hit, the screen flashes, and there are eight frames. Hit the bomb button in that window, and the damage will not land.

Developed by DeerFarm and published by CFK, Shikhondo: Blue Pieta will be released for PC via Steam/Stove on May 18. PlayStation and Nintendo Switch versions will follow.

She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
