The key art for Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave.

Nintendo dropped a massive amount of information during today’s Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Direct. Details on the protagonists, the Heroic Games, what lies beyond Dagsion, classes, combat, and more were all included. I’m in awe that they got so many details into a 22-minute presentation!

The Dagdan Empire is at the peak of prosperity while under the rule of the gods. Its capital city, Dagsion, attracts fighters from all over to compete in the Heroic Games, which grant the winner one wish. Among these contestants are four Heroes, all tied to the fate of the world. Cai set out with his friends to win the Games and free his imprisoned father. Dietrich loves to battle and wants to compete with his new allies. Theodora wants to restore the honour of her goddess and defend the peace of her kingdom. Lena enters the Games after she learns that her father’s murderer may also be competing.

Five years later, the Dagdan Empire nears its end at the hands of the demon god Balor. The Four Heroes have vanished. Progenitor god Sothis charges one soul with saving the world from its end: you. You could face Balor on your own, or use Fortuna’s time-travelling powers to change the fates of the four Heroes. You can travel through time from each hero’s story to change to a different path, with each hero’s progress saved separately.

You will explore Dagsion between Heroic Games matches for your equipment, boons, and more. As you progress, more facilities unlock. You can also exit the city to strengthen your team in battle. Train your skills at the arena, buy weapons at the shopping arcade, volunteer on Temple Row, obtain new classes, complete quests, recruit warriors to your ranks, rest, and eat: what you do with your time is ultimately up to you.

In the world map, time passes whenever you move. You can visit towns to purchase local goods, gather information, and gain experience. In dungeons, collect treasures and materials to strengthen weapons. Enemies in the dungeon feature turn-based battles.

There are five Beginner Classes dedicated to playing a foundational role in battle: gladiators, diviners, ornius riders, and more. The over 10 Specialty Classes each have specific abilities; armoured knights, wing soldiers, and charioteers fall under the category. Advanced Classes are masters of their skills; cataphracts have the mobility of horses, guardians are skilled at white magic, and elephant riders fight perched upon their giant mounts.

Here is more information on combat, via Nintendo:

  • Means of Attack – In battle, units can employ various weaponry, including swords, gauntlets that aid in evasion, spears that can massively damage cavalry units, axes with low accuracy but high attack power, bows that strike at a distance, and magic which is effective against heavily armoured foes and can heal or otherwise support allies. There are also swords that call down lightning, gauntlets that look like firearms and other unique weapons to find.
  • Positioning – On the battlefield, positioning is key. Avoid potential counterattacks by attacking enemies who wield close-range weapons from a distance, and long-range opponents up close. Terrain can also be an advantage, and adjacent allies can receive buffs. Assess the situation and control the battle in your favour.
  • Combat and Blaze Arts – Combat arts are attacks unleashed at the expense of weapon durability. There are attacks with greater power, longer range or other advantageous effects, so use them in decisive moments. Blaze Arts are special moves that can turn the tide of battle at the cost of a Hero’s health points. For example, Cai releases a burst of flames in a wide area; Dietrich’s ink-black cloak can warp him to locations on the battlefield; Leda plays her vihuela to buff allies, summon a powerful monster and more.
  • Fortuna’s Blessing – After each move, you can turn back time to any previous point in battle. You are free to rethink your strategy if things don’t go as planned, or a favoured unit is routed unexpectedly.

Developed by Intelligence Systems and published by Nintendo, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave will be released exclusively for Switch 2 on September 17.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
