Plot Twist, a Melbourne-based games studio, has announced that the visual novel Ashes will launch in Early Access this May, with a full launch planned for December. This period of time will be used to finish the story, refine the existing minigames/add new ones, and provide new narrative content. The game blends graphic novel panels with interactive puzzles.

Set in Victoria, Australia, Azar witnesses a gruesome murder and seeks refuge on her estranged grandfather’s farm… but he may be even more dangerous than those pursuing her. She must fight to stay alive and reveal dark truths about those she considers trustworthy.

Here are the game’s key features, via Plot Twist:

  • A Story of Murder and Suspense – While hiding from those determined to silence her, Azar takes refuge at her estranged grandfather’s property. However, his strange behaviour soon leads her to suspect Stan is harbouring terrible secrets of his own.
  • Puzzle Solving – Ashes blends visual novel elements with mini-game puzzles that engage with the world. From piecing together torn-up photos to cracking the code for a mysterious lockbox to firing a rifle at a homemade shooting range, Azar will need her wits about her as threats lurk in the shadows.
  • An Interactive Graphic Novel – With a dynamic graphic novel visual style, the hand-crafted artwork captures the magnitude of Azar’s story with a gritty depiction of Victoria, Australia.

Developed and published by Plot Twist, Ashes will be released in Early Access on May 7 for PC via Steam. It features the first 11 chapters of the game.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
