The key art for CRYMELIGHT.

Over the weekend, Japanese developer/publisher FuRyu announced CRYMELIGHT, the latest installment in its CRY series. Adventures in Wonderland inspired the dark world, and the gameplay features a new action roguelike format. The series follows young female heroines navigating dark fantasy worlds, while CRYMELIGHT in particular explores themes of confronting sins, regrets, and emotional growth. The game is scheduled for release this November for PC, PlayStation 5, and Switch 2.

CRYMELIGHT follows the events of 2019’s CRYSTAR and 2023’s CRYMACHINA. A girl known as Alice wakes up with no memories and learns she must journey to the last level of Purgatory to earn her Rebirth. Set out from the Tea Party Hall, defeat enemies born from madness, and confront Alice’s sins.

Alice will travel between two realms: a prison called Wonderland, where dead souls are held captive, and a sanctuary called The Tea Party, which offers respite to young girls burdened by their sins. At the Tea Party, Alice confesses and atones for the sins she accumulated during combat, rewarding her enhancements and power-ups.

Defeating enemies in combat triggers a burst of energy that results in a shimmering blue-violet space beneath the player’s feet. The more this space expands, the more Alice’s powers are amplified. The specific skills acquired alter the nature of these enhancements, transforming the player’s combat style. Use this system to change the direction of battles: expand the battlefield itself, utilizing its space as much as possible.

Between stages, collect Skill Cards with a poker-style build system. The stronger your hand of five cards, the more potent its effects become. Clearing a stage rewards skill cards that can be combined with those in Alice’s Hand. Dying sends Alice back to the Tea Party Hall.

There are two ways to play CRYMELIGHT: in World-Immersion Mode and in Action Mode. World-Immersion Mode minimizes UI, prioritizes some visual effects, and keeps the camera close with a side-angle view. Action Mode pulls the camera to a top-down perspective, keeps all critical UI elements visible, and prioritizes combat.

CRYMELIGHT is currently available to pre-order from the PlayStation Store. The standard edition includes the game. The Deluxe Edition includes the game, a six-item DLC set, and an art and sound app. In addition, the original CRYSTAR is on sale until May 5 for $2 USD on PC and $4 on PlayStation 5/4.

Developed and published by FuRyu, CRYMELIGHT will be released on November 5 for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Switch 2.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
