I am positively giddy that I can share this news: Playground Games’ Fable has a 2026 launch window! Xbox and Playground Games announced the window during today’s Xbox Developer Direct. A short gameplay trailer is available below, but if you’d like to watch a 15-minute deep dive into the game (and you know you do), you can watch here.
Ralph Fulton, GM and Game Director at Playground Games, also made a post on the PlayStation Blog sharing the first details on the open-world take on Albion. Those details will be summarized below.
The new Albion is a world that is familiar in spirit but reimagined for modern RPG players. Fable is a new beginning for the franchise that is designed to capture the heart (and humour) of the original trilogy while also bringing in contemporary storytelling, world design, and player agency. That means all the great parts of the first trilogy should be there: a blend of choice and consequence, dry British wit, and playful moral chaos. And chickens. Oh yes, there will be chickens…
Heroism isn’t about being perfect; it’s about navigating the decisions that come in life, including those small, messy, funny choices that shape who we become. Even small actions can snowball into stories that the townsfolk will remember (and judge).
Albion is a fully open world, not a backdrop. It participates in the story. Each NPC is unique, with different routines, relationships, and opinions. They react to everything you do. Sometimes this just changes conversations; other times it literally reshapes a part of the world.
Fable remains self-aware, with an ability to poke fun at hero tropes, the world, and sometimes the player.
Combat weaves together melee, ranged, and magic so players can create their fighting identity. Fable features the return of some creatures, while new threats fit the tone of the world.
Developed by Playground Games and published by Xbox Game Studios, Fable will be released for PC via Xbox, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series this (Northern) autumn.
