The key art for Breakout Beyond.

Developer Choice Provisions is best known for the BIT.TRIP series of games, and it is about to enter the classic realm of another beloved B-titled game: Breakout! Breakout Beyond is a neon-drenched take on the classic 1976 arcade game. Players must break through each puzzle by clearing each block until the final goal is met. There is also a two-player co-op mode. The game will be released in March for all major platforms (plus Atari VCS).

Breakout Beyond is “beyond” the original for a reason: instead of the traditional portrait angle, it uses a constantly moving widescreen view. Handle multiple balls bouncing at all angles in its frenetic gameplay. If blocks are in the way, shoot them down. Longer play racks up combos, increasing the intensity of the effects and creating a light show as a reward.

Here is more information from Atari, Breakout Beyond’s publisher:

Special blocks will grant an edge like large brick-clearing blasts, a barrier that’ll save your ball, and a laser cannon to clear a path. Each one will reward players with dazzling dynamic effects that create an excitement that hasn’t been seen in Breakout before.

Each of the 72 levels will push your skills to the limit, but you won’t be without help. A focus mode will allow you to slow down time at the expense of your score. Or, if you want some help and company, you can tag in a friend to play through the entire game in local two-player co-op.

Features

    • 72 levels that will push your brick-breaking skills to the test
    • Unlockable endless mode with an online global leaderboard
    • Two-player co-op to manage the chaos with a friend
    • Procedural audio and visual effects that ramp up with your combo

Developed by Choice Provisions and published by Atari, Breakout Beyond will be released for PC (Steam, Epic), PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Atari VCS, Xbox Series, and Xbox One this March.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
