The key art for Action Game Maker.

The Maker series of games should need no introduction. RPG Maker has been a popular way to build RPGs since the early ’90s, and many creations have become bestsellers and/or won awards. (Corpse Party is a great example.) The series will introduce a new genre later this year when Gotcha Gotcha Games launches Action Game Maker this June.

DDNet’s Editor-in-Chief Matt raved about the latest in the series, RPG Maker WITH, writing, “I’ve loved being able to just make use of what’s in RPG Maker WITH to get a basic JRPG up and running. There are still more than enough assets available to make a full-scale SNES-era JRPG if you want to. DLC packs allow for an even greater variety of assets to play around with.”

Built using the Godot Engine, Action Game Maker provides access to professional-level functions without any programming needed. There is a large collection of samples and assets to create the foundation for any game. These samples are simple and pixel-style to make modifications easy, but you can also import high-resolution assets.

Action Game Maker began with the node-based visual scripting system created for Pixel Game Maker MV and promises improvement. Since there’s no programming required, you can connect Actions (like you would with RPG Maker‘s Event Commands) and see your game come together. You can make a side-scrolling or top-down game, but the type is up to you: platformers, Metroidvanias, horror, adventure, shooting, puzzles, etc.

Godot Engine is an open-source engine with 2D functionality. In Action Game Maker, the user interface design is based on the current Godot user interface. Here are some other functions of the engine from Action Game Maker’s Steam page:

  • Support for GDScript is provided for those who want to move beyond visual scripting.
  • A complete 2D pipeline.
  • Tile Map Editor with auto-tile function.
  • Supports both sprite and 2D bone animation systems.
  • Access to Godot’s rich particle and shader systems as well as support for dynamic lighting and shadows, enabling a full suite of graphics features!

Developed and published by Gotcha Gotcha Games, Action Game Maker will be released for PC (Steam) on June 16.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
