Rune Factory 5 is a game that nearly didn’t happen, on account of the Rune Factory developer going bankrupt, and then nothing but crickets on the property being saved for nearly a decade. For that reason, when this against-the-odds new entry in the series launched as a temporary exclusive Switch game earlier this year, we were over the moon, and thankfully the game backed that up by being really high quality.
This article is basically just to highlight that the game is available on Steam now, so if you don’t have a Switch (why?) you have no excuse.
The system requirements are pretty modest, too:
- Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
- OS: Windows 8.1 or later
- Processor: Intel Core i5-6500
- Memory: 8 GB RAM
- Graphics: Nvidia GTX 660 Ti
- DirectX: Version 11
- Storage: 9 GB available space
As an added bonus, there are achievements and other mild improvements to help elevate the game on PC beyond its already significant highs. Notably, the game’s visual issues on Switch are vastly improved. As our good friend Robert wrote in his review over at Tech-Gaming: “Largely, much of that will be remedied on even a modest rig, and we were able to get consistent 60fps fluidity on a RTX 2060 Max-Q running at 1080p. On a beefier machine, the game deliver 4K output while striving to maintain a 120 frames-per-second. Intermittently, the game’s cell-shaded visuals are attractive enough to make forget that this is a Switch port.”
With those visual issues out of the way, you can kick back and enjoy the quality of what will be one of our Game of the Year contenders. As I wrote in my own review of the Switch release: “It’s a comfort food kind of experience, and while this might cost it on store shelves given that it has been released at the tail end of so many excellent, intelligent, innovative, and big RPGs, it’s a game of simple delights and pleasant experiences. Sometimes, that’s enough.”
