Super Mario 3D All-Stars: What makes them so playable?

Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a new collection from Nintendo that includes Mario 64, Mario Sunshine, and Mario Galaxy (1, not 2). The three games in the collection are all excellent, and while the overall package isn’t perfect (check out my review on DDNet for that analysis), playing through these games again has reminded me of just how good and timeless they really are.

So I’ve created this quick little video to look at some of the reasons that I find these games so playable, even as someone who doesn’t usually love 3D platformers, and the lessons that many modern game developers can yet learn from them.

Are you a fan of Mario yourself? If so, sound out in the comments! I’d love to hear from you!
