The Rubik’s WOWCube combines the traditional Rubik’s Cube shape with the power of a contemporary smart device

It's part toy, part console, part brain workout.

It’s not very often I share the news of a new console from a company other than the big three (Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo), but this new take on a classic toy has caught my eye. The Rubik’s WOWCube — today I learned that WOWCube is a thing! — takes everything nostalgic about the Rubik’s Cube and adds what’s needed to keep the current generation coming back for more. The 3D combination puzzle consists of rotating cubes with screens on each cube’s faces. Today, prospective players get their first look at the upcoming quirky gaming platform.

Rubik’s WOWCube doesn’t have the iconic 3×3 per side layout that the original Rubik’s Cube has; instead, it features 2×2 tiles per side. This means each side of the cube has four screens (and a series of helpful gyroscopes). It can play “classic” games like Space Invaders or Cut the Rope (I’m not sure about one of those things being called classic, but I digress), and give players a new perspective on hits like 2048.

We aren’t talking just hardware and built-in software here: developers can create and upload their games, apps, and more for users to enjoy thanks to its open platform. The hardware does allow the software to shine, though, being described as opening “a new frontier of tactile, physics-based digital design, with tools and support to help creators bring ideas to life in 3D space.”

“We’re incredibly excited to bring the Rubik’s WOWCube to a wider audience,” said Max Filin, Co-Founder and CEO of handheld tech innovator Cubios Inc. “The original WOWCube taught us a lot about designing a new way to experience gaming and designing a new platform for developers to build upon. In the two years since we launched the original, we listened to the feedback we received and used it to improve not just the product, but also our approach to how we designed it. This iteration not only implements all our learnings but is also now officially part of the iconic Rubik’s family.”

A collaboration between Cubios Inc. and the children’s entertainment company Spin Master, the Rubik’s WOWCube is expected to be released by the end of 2025.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
