For the last news story in a week that has been absolutely loaded with great news, Taito has announced the release date for its Space Invaders: Invincible Collection – the Switch-exclusive pack of classic Space Invaders titles. It launches in Japan on March 26, 2020.

We still don’t have a release date in the west (or confirmation that it’s coming at all, sadly), but as retro packages go, this one is going to be very import-friendly (you don’t exactly need to understand much Japanese to play Space Invaders). There are two different options. The basic pack will set you back around $60 Australian, and includes:

Space Invaders (1978, Arcade) – Black-and-White Version
Space Invaders (1978, Arcade) – Color Version
Space Invaders Part II (1979, Arcade)
Super Space Invaders ’91 (also known as MJ-12 / Majestic Twelve) (1990, Arcade)
Space Invaders Extreme (2018, PC)
… as well as some additional titles to be announced in the future

Now if that sounds a little bit on the pricey side, remember that Space Invaders is utterly timeless… and Space Invaders Extreme alone is a masterpiece well worth the price of a full game (we reviewed that one at DDNet not long ago).

The second option that you have is the special edition, which is for the Space Invaders faithful. It will set you back around $200 Australian, and comes with a range of goodies, including some additional games:

Space Invaders DX (1994, Arcade)
Space Cyclone (1980, Arcade)
Lunar Rescue (1979, Arcade)
… as well as some additional titles to be announced in the future

In addition to the extra games, the special edition also comes with an original Space Invaders-themed board game, an art book filled with nostalgia, a Taito-branded pouch, and five instruction cards.

It would be awesome if one of the remaining games to be announced in the package is the Game Boy Space Invaders, as that was the one that I played most in my childhood, but either way, this entire package represents heaps of nostalgic quality for the Space Invaders faithful, and I’m sure as heck going to make sure I land myself a special edition.
