The weekly discussion: Your hidden gems

Most gamers will have at least one of these games in their collection; a game they wouldn’t normally buy, but on a whim (or lack of anything else to play), they picked a game up and was surprised by it.

Perhaps it’s a game that you hadn’t heard of before the box art caught your attention, or perhaps even it was a gift from someone who doesn’t know your usual taste in games, but after playing it you decided not to trade it in.

So, this week let’s talk about the most unusual games that you have in your collection!

This is the bio under which all legacy DigitallyDownloaded.net articles are published (as in the 12,000-odd, before we moved to the new Website and platform). This is not a member of the DDNet Team. Please see the article's text for byline attribution.

  • To kick the comments off – my most recent purchase is actually one of these. If I saw Tank! Tank! Tank! on the shelf for the PS3 or Xbox 360, I would likely ignore it, but because there are relatively few Wii U games to play at the moment, I decided to give it a go.

I am so glad I did. One of my favourite multiplayer games in years.

  • A lot of hidden gems are games I don't normally play but ended up being happy with it right?

There are two – Osu! Tatakae Ouendan (forgot if that's the correct spelling) and Uttatchi (or Uttachi, I forgot already) Yeah I'm into RockBand and Guitar Hero, but I would usually ignore a rhythm game on portables because I don't normally see the beauty of it. But come on, these are Japanese rhythm games whose some of the song tracks I am quite familiar (I'm into JPop/Rock as well.) I have them now. And it turns out, when I searched on the Internet, everyone loves these games as well. 🙂

  • Lots of games, mainstream or not, are this for me. I tend to pick things up on a whim if the line at gamestop is too long and something catches my eye. Among others, I did that with SMT: Strange Journey and Muramasa: The Demon Blade recently (on separate occasions). Both very fine titles and great additions to my library. Both also probably better than the games I went there to buy.

  • I had no idea what I was getting into when I picked up A Virus Named Tom on a whim. Must have been shortly after they opened pre-orders. Ever since then, I'm in love with that game.

  • I've only played the Elite Beat Agents version of Osu! Tatakae Ouendan. I can only imagine how much fun that would be with crazy JPop in the background 😀

  • I hear a lot of great things about A Virus Named Tom, but I don't really know enough about it. What made you pick up the game in the first place?

  • There was a time in me and my friends' lives when we were all playing Elite Beat Agens like crazy. That song by Chicago, "You're the Inspiration" is like our anthem for 6 months. Haha, the days.

  • I'm not exactly sure. The art style? The hilarious beta progress update videos? Dunno. Lucky pick, I guess. Anyway, there is a demo, but don't let that fool you, since it's a bit on the easy side. The game gets tough in the later levels. And local co-op is brilliant.

  • Oh heck yes, Fatal Frame is by far the most frightening horror series I've ever played. The Wii remake of Fatal Frame 2 is incredible. A pity Nintendo never localised it in the US.

  • Well, Pandora's Tower is on the way courtesy of XSeed – so there's a chance it might pick up another Wii "final hurrah," though it's small, I guess.

The Fatal Frame franchise is actually co-owned by Nintendo and TK now. Nintendo's publishing the series going forward 🙂
