To celebrate the NEOGEO’s 20th birthday, SNK Playmore has announced that its anniversary home/portable NEOGEO X GOLD console will be making its worldwide release for the Holiday season.

Back in its heyday, the NEOGEO was like a top of the line sports car. It was flashy, ran great and looked phenomenal. The console was capable of exactly duplicating the arcade experience (which was the zenith of graphical greatness at the time) at home. Unfortunately, also like most sports cars, it was incredibly expensive- and so were the game cartridges for that matter.

Now as the NEOGEO’s 20th birthday comes around, SNK Playmore is releasing an anniversary system to celebrate. What’s really cool about it is that it’s essentially two consoles in one.

The NEOGEO X GOLD is comprised of three parts- the NEOGEO X station, handheld, and joystick. The handheld is a straight-up portable that can play anywhere and features a set of 20 built in games and a game card slot for expansion.

Fond memories of the NEOGEO Pocket…

If you want to play at home and have the full ‘console’ experience, you can just plug the little guy into the ‘station’ portion. Do that and you can use the joystick with it as a fully functional NEOGEO console right on your TV.

The NEOGEO X GOLD entertainment system comes complete with the NEOGEO X Station, the NEOGEO X Handheld with 20 pre-loaded NEOGEO classic titles, and the NEOGEO X Joystick. In addition to coming pre-loaded with 20 NEOGEO classic titles, the NEOGEO X Handheld device features a crisp 4.3″ LCD display, an expandable game card slot, internal stereo speakers, and a 3.5mm headphone jack for a personal gaming experience you can take anywhere. The NEOGEO X Handheld device works with the NEOGEO X Joystick and NEOGEO X Station to charge the handheld device and transfer the action directly to a television set or monitor, via HDMI or A/V out, for a true arcade experience right at home.

The games that are built into the unit are most of what you’d expect and are some of the better known titles that ever brandished the name NEOGEO:
  • 3 Count Bout
  • Art of Fighting II
  • Alpha Mission II
  • Baseball Star II
  • Cyber Lip
  • Fatal Fury
  • Fatal Fury Special
  • King of Fighters ’95 (Yay!)
  • King of the Monsters
  • Last Resort
  • League Bowling
  • Magician Lord
  • Metal Slug
  • Mutation Nation
  • Nam 1975
  • Puzzled
  • Real Bout Fatal Fury Special
  • Samurai Showdown II
  • Super Sidekicks
  • World Heroes Perfect
Support (as far as more games) for the new console is a little mysterious at this point, but it does have an expansion slot that is labeled for “game card” use. That’s promising if nothing else. The price is a bit high at $199.99 USD, but honestly- just as a collector’s piece (in that market) this is pretty awesome. As a fan of the industry in general, and all the odd little consoles and niche releases it’s seen, I’m personally pretty tempted.
If the NEOGEO X GOLD looks like something that might interest you, it’ll go on sale worldwide on December 6th for $199.99 USD. It’ll be distributed by Tommo in North America and by BLAZE and Success Company in the European and Asian territories.
