If you have yet to play Activision’s re-imagining of Goldeneye on this generation’s round of hardware, you’re in luck. Sort of.

Originally released way back on the N64, Goldeneye 007 was re-re-released (it re-launched on the Wii previously) last year for the Xbox 360 and PS3 to decent reviews and fan reaction.

Though the original was a certifiable classic, Goldeneye 007 Reloaded wasn’t held in such a high regard. It is a good, solid shooter and isn’t a bad game in any way- it’s just not that easy of a task to update a true great of the genre. Tough spot to be in as a developer to be sure.

Anyhoo, if you missed out on it the first time around (or would that be the second?) and would like the chance to play out the classic Bond adventure as Craig-Bond, the game is now up for purchase and subsequent download on the Playstation Network. The catch? It’s priced at $59.99 USD. While that wouldn’t be so much of a big deal if the game were only a few months old, Reloaded currently has 6 months plus on the shelf and can be had for as little as $34.00 (USD) used at Gamestop. Even ‘new’, the game is only forty bones- pretty big difference.

If Sony (and Microsoft for that matter) wants to start getting serious about the whole ‘games on demand’ thing, they might want to consider instituting a new price regulation system. Pricing downloadable versions of games below what the physical copies are selling for would be a huge incentive for players to go digital. I know, it’s a novel thought (sarcasm!), but it’s the only way short of forcing the situation that any sort of real changeover will come to the medium.

YUP…I got the email and before I got to the price I was like, "Oh, this is pretty cool, and if it's got a great price that's even more awesome….$60!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT IN THE WORLD are they thinking?!"
Heck, I could probably drive to the store, purchase it, come back play it and beat it…and go trade it back in for less than half of $60, and the digital version would STILL be downloading. Okay, beating it that quickly might not be possible, but I think it would be pretty close.

  • I think that might actually work man- it's not all that long of a game.

$60 is waaaaaay too much to expect to get out of something like this. I'd blame Activision for the pricing, but it's Sony's network. Set some guidelines that make sense guys.

  • I imagine the guidelines are coming – Sony has demanded that the Vita downloadables are cheaper than the retail counterparts, for instance.

This is good news for Australians. This game is really quite hard to find at retail, so it's nice that they're able to play it now. Hell, if it helps boost the multiplayer numbers than I might start playing it again.

  • That's a good point about the PSV stuff, but I hope we're going to see older games that debut on the PSN (like Goldeneye) get more than a $5 price cut. *Crossing fingers*
