An unspecified number of employees at Sony Santa Monica, the developer of the successful God of War franchise, have been laid off, with Sony claiming a “resource re-alignment” via a press release.

This is the second announcement in as many weeks of a major developer of critically-acclaimed AAA-games being hit by strife. Last week Irrational Games announced that it was winding up.

Sony Santa Monica was supporting Ready at Dawn’s production of The Order: 1886 on the PlayStation 4, but had formally completed work on the God of War franchise, so it’s possible that the studio is simply between major projects at the moment, and until it’s ready to start ramping up for its next big thing it’s looking to cut down on expenses.
