Hand-drawn indie mystery game The Posthumous Investigation puts a supernatural spin on the detective genre: death is not the end, it’s the opening statement. Play as a private eye hired by an unusual client: the victim himself. The game has currently been wishlisted over 20K times on Steam. And the office will open soon. The Posthumous Investigation will launch for PC at the end of March, and a Nintendo Switch version is currently in development.

Here is a description of The Posthumous Investigation, via the developer and publisher:

Brás Cubas is dead, but his spirit is restless. Trapped in a purgatorial time loop in 1937 Rio de Janeiro, you must solve the mystery of his murder to break the cycle. Blending the deduction mechanics of Return of the Obra Dinn with the atmosphere of classic Film Noir, players must manipulate the schedules of 14 suspects, uncover contradictory alibis, and piece together the perfect crime before the day resets.

In The Posthumous Investigation, you must investigate a murder where the only witness is the ghost of the victim, who hired you to solve their murder. You have one day to save the case, but infinite chances. Learn about 14 distinct characters by shadowing them and use knowledge from past loops to unlock new dialogue paths. Use your Thinking Board to physically connect the clues, reconstruct timelines, and use pure logic to find the killer. Nobody here is innocent — including your otherworldly client.

“We wanted to create a detective game where the setting itself is a puzzle,” said Bruno Toledo, Game Director at Mother Gaia Studio, in a press release. “By combining the time-loop mechanic with the rich, satirical world of Machado de Assis, we’ve built a mystery that challenges players to think like a true investigator—where every failed loop is just another clue.”

Developed by Mother Gaia Studio and published by CriticalLeap, The Posthumous Investigation will be released for PC via Steam on March 31, with a Nintendo Switch version to follow. An in-browser demo is available here.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
