Western publisher NIS America has announced a May 2027 release date for storybook adventure game The Grimm Reapress and the Drearytale Monster. The single-player, story-driven adventure, from the team behind The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince, originally launched in Japan in April 2026. In the West, it will launch for PC, PlayStation 5, Switch 2, and Switch.
This hand-drawn fairy tale is set in a world where a magical disease (Paper Mortis) turns people into picture books, and picture books into monsters. It follows Mono, whose sister contracts Paper Mortis. Mono will do anything to cure this incurable illness, including working with a monster hell-bent on vengeance. As Mono, dive into storybooks and learn about the girls who became them. Solve puzzles, fight bosses, and do whatever it takes to track down your sister and save her.
Here are the game’s key features, via NIS America:
- Stories with Bite – Dangers abound in the storybooks! Fortunately, Mar is at your side to bite back. Command him to use his powers to attack enemies, tear up the paper world, and solve puzzles. But be careful: if you use him too much, he may go berserk!
- Grimm Fates – Mono’s sister isn’t the only girl to contract Paper Mortis. Explore the stories of several tragic heroines by entering their picture books. Each tale is a look at their pasts and psyche rendered in gorgeous art and culminates in a riveting boss battle!
- Learn Your Lessons – Unlock abilities for Mar whenever you clear a storybook, then return to prior worlds for new rewards! Breathe fire, fly, and more as you tackle the mysteries of the Libratarium!
Developed by Nippon Ichi Software and published in the West by NIS America, The Grimm Reapress and the Drearytale Monster will be released for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Switch 2, and Switch on May 13, 2027.
