The key art for Dead Pets.

After reviving Dead Pets Unleashed from the dead, Akupara Games has renamed it to the mouthy Dead Pets: A Punk Rock Slice of Life Sim. The publisher has announced a February release date for its PC launch. Step into Gordy’s grungy shoes as you follow the 30-something demon who is barely holding things together while fronting a punk rock band that’s one bad gig away from obliteration. Life in the city is hard, but moreso for Gordy than others: she’s juggling band practice, dead-end jobs, money-hungry landlords, performative friendships, and a love life that teeters on public torture. The game is described as a feminist, slice-of-life, management-lite, minigame-heavy narrative rhythm game.

Here is a description of the game, via Akupara Games:

Experience the surreal and the exaggerated, as Gordy spirals deeper into the mundane, wrestling more and more with the unbearable weight of being a failure. Dive headfirst into unhinged minigames, including uterus pinball, dildo detailing, demonic dentistry, and blind dates that’ll make your skin buzz with anticipation. With her found family and search for purpose in jeopardy, Gordy’s on a quest to turn her many failed attempts at “adulting” from bad decisions and public humiliation into conscious choices and fun memories; it’s all up to you to save her from herself.

Dead Pets hasn’t hit it big yet, but they will any day now, I swear! Manage Gordy’s mess of a life: go to band practice, crush a diner shift, chat with friends, and more. The game blends narrative insanity, management-lite systems, rhythm gameplay, and unpredictable mini-games. It is a brutally honest feminist take on adulthood that leans into messiness, volatility, and ludicrous humour. Success is never a guarantee, stability is fleeting at best, and survival of the fittest is in your hands.

Here are the game’s key features, again via Akupara Games:

  • Killer Soundtrack: Dead Pets features an original punk rock EP performed during the game.
  • Play As the Band: Embrace scorching riffs as you shred your way through rhythm-game heaven featuring crossover tracks from other Akupara favourites like Cryptmaster, Airframe Ultra, Cabernet, and many more in Jukebox Mode!
  • Manage Your Choices: Every choice affects Gordy’s wellbeing, the band’s power, her social points, or costs her money.
  • A Demon City Filled With Life: New Void City is filled with NPCs to befriend, with their own storylines.
  • Minigames for Days: Including working a shift at a diner (diner dash), watering your plant Satan, and making hot dogs.
  • Success is in Your Hands: It’s up to you to hold the band together or let it crumble, one member at a time
  • Cartoonish Inspirations: For fans of Bojack Horseman and Tuca and Bertie. The developers were inspired by their colourful, surreal worlds, long-term and complicated adult friends, and zany, offbeat humour.

Developed by Triple Topping and published by Akupara Games, Dead Pets: A Punk Rock Slice of Life Sim will be released for PC via Steam on February 6.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
