Demonschool developer Necrosoft Games might be based in California, but the school-life tactics RPG didn’t appear during the Western version of Nintendo’s Indie World Showcase yesterday. Instead, its release date trailer was revealed during the Japanese version of Nintendo’s regular indie game spotlight presentation. Like the other featured games, Demonschool will be launching for more than just Nintendo Switch, and it will also be released for PC/Steam Deck, PlayStation, and Xbox in early September.
Demonschool is inspired by Persona, Shin Megami Tensei, and Italian horror cinema. Set at an island university, players take on the role of demon-hunting heir Faye. Survive supernatural investigations, bloody battles, and the most horrific time of year — exam week. Manage Faye’s and her allies’ schedules to make room for both hangout time and tactical combat training. Combat takes place on a chess-like board where time can be rewound.
Faye comes from a demon-hunting family. As a college freshman, she now sees creatures in real life that she has only seen in ancient tomes, as they haunt her school. To survive a semester, she will need to make friends, forge relationships, and battle gruesome monsters. Fifteen playable characters equal hundreds of party combinations. Each character has a specialty: Faye’s kicks, Namako’s debuffs, Destin’s knockbacks, etc. Boost their skills by making time for training and accepting their side quests outside of class hours. Cultivate bonds to compose powerful battle combos.
Here is a brief description of the game’s battle system, via a press release:
In a realm where 2D and 3D collide, encounter and fight the demon world’s worst beasts and bosses, from gory crawling hellspawn to giant skeletons and stacks of televisions. Strategically choose each party member’s path in the Planning phase with unlimited rewinds to perfect each turn, then watch every punch, heal, and combo play out simultaneously in the Action phase.
“At long last, Demonschool is finally coming out. It’s been a long road but we’re through certification and ready to go,” said Brandon Sheffield, Creative Director at Necrosoft Games, in a press release. “We really put a lot of ourselves into this thing and now the future of Demonschool is in your hands. We truly hope you will enjoy it.”
Developed by Necrosoft Games and published by Ysbryd Games, Demonschool will be released for PC via Steam/Epic (it is also Steam Deck compatible), PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series on September 3.
