Turn your photos into minigames with Nintendo’s Pictonico! app

Nintendo has announced something new—not entirely a game, but an app relating to games. Pictonico! turns your smartphone photos into minigames. The app/game is free-to-start, with some demos available, but requires purchases for most gameplay. Your photos are not sent to Nintendo. Pictonico! will be released for iOS/Android later this week.

It’s all kind of silly, but there’s no telling what will happen next. Maybe your boss is hungry and needs your help. Maybe you want to wash away embarrassing memories. Maybe Grandpa is dressed like a ballerina. And maybe just your best friend turns into a final boss! There are 80 minigames total, available to be purchased in volumes.

From Nintendo, Pictonico! will be released for iOS/Android on May 28.

Mirth Island announced for PC and consoles

SOEDESCO has announced that it will be publishing Clay Game Studio’s cozy rhythm adventure game, Mirth Island, for PC and consoles. The game is about perseverance and acts of kindness, and follows a young duck named Dodo as he returns to his homeland after his acting dreams don’t come to fruition. When he returns home, he learns that the legendary theatre that first inspired him is crumbling to the ground.

Dodo works with his childhood friends to rebuild the theatre. Through helping islanders with their problems, Dodo gains support, makes new friends, and brings life back to the community. Thanks to these small acts of kindness, Dodo slowly heals his own heart.

  • Enjoyable rhythm games in every corner of the game.
  • Rebuild the theatre and recruit new members by doing wholesome quests.
  • Experience a heartwarming story about perseverance and discovering meaning by doing small acts of kindness.

Developed by Clay Game Studio and published by SOEDESCO, Mirth Island will be released for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series later this year.

Check out the latest RollerGirl trailer

I first set my eyes on RollerGirl during not-E3 2023, and I don’t know what hooked me first: the idea of rollerblading around a relatively small city, or the fact that the location is two hours from my hometown and I have family that lives there. Regardless, I was immediately interested. Now, three years have passed, and the most recent update about the game is a trailer from the Six One Indie Showcase. In the trailer, 16-year-old Naomi visits townsfolk and enjoys summer vibes.

In RollerGirl, players play as Naomi as she does odd jobs for eccentric neighbours in an effort to fix her car and find an escape from town. Talk to her neighbours, get wrapped up in small-town shenanigans, fall in love, and expose a local cover-up. Music and dialogue choices help shape Naomi’s summer.

Here are the key features, via Pushing Vertices:

  • Change the playlist and the world reacts.
  • Collect music around town to grow your playlists.
  • Enjoy a curated, 2000s-inspired soundtrack.
  • Glide through open streets, discover shortcuts, and poke around people’s backyards.
  • Earn money to fix your car by helping out your… interesting neighbours.
  • Run errands, recover lost items and meet your first crush.

Developed and published by Pushing Vertices, RollerGirl will be released for PC via Steam later this year.

The Florist is coming to consoles, announced with a new gameplay trailer

When I first wrote about The Florist last November, the game had only been announced for PC, with a console announcement to follow. And now is the time to learn the full list of platforms for the survival horror game! The platform list at the end of the Gardens of Death trailer adds PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 versions. Final release information will be available later this year.

Here is a description of the game via Unclear Games:

The Florist tells the story of Jessica Park, who arrives in the lakeside town of Joycliffe to make a last-minute delivery. Her timing sparks disaster as the town quickly descends into a deadly fight for survival against omnipresent floral overgrowth. Solve ingenious puzzles, defeat horrifying enemies, and uncover a mysterious plan to create new life in the most inhuman way imaginable.

Developed and published by Unclear Games, The Florist will be released for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Switch 2.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
