Animal Crossing fans worldwide will receive two late holiday gifts this year: in January, the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Animal Crossing: New Horizons launches, and as of the same day, the 3.0 update will be available for both versions of the game. The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of the game features enhancements, including graphics and mouse controls. The 3.0 update adds a new resort hotel and Slumber Island.
Here is a brief description of this game, via Nintendo:
Animal Crossing: New Horizons invites you to create your island paradise at your own pace as you garden, fish, decorate, hunt for bugs and fossils, get to know the animal residents and more. The time of day and seasons mirror the ebb and flow of real life, so each day on your island is a chance to check in and find new surprises all year round.
The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of the game includes improved resolution (4K in TV mode), mouse controls, an in-game megaphone, and 12-player online sessions. The mouse controls help decorate indoors, create Custom Designs, and compose handwritten messages for the bulletin board. Fans of Animal Crossing: New Leaf will recognize the megaphone, originally removed in New Horizons due to the lack of a microphone on the Nintendo Switch, which can once again be used to locate specific residents on the island. Multiplayer sessions are compatible via CameraPlay.
Both versions of the game will receive the 3.0 update features. These features include a resort hotel, Resetti’s tidying service, Slumber Island, brand collaborations, and more.
- A resort hotel run by Kapp’n’s family is opening on the pier. Decorate guest rooms to attract new visitors to the island, find new furniture and clothing at the souvenir shop, and dress up mannequins so visitors can don appropriate island apparel.
- Resetti’s Reset Service tidies up your island.
- Home storage can be upgraded to hold up to 9,000 items (including trees, shrubs, and flowers) versus the current 5,000-item limit.
- Players with a Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) membership can design up to three Slumber Islands and play with friends online. First, select the size and layout of the island, then build/design with access to your inventory.
- Nintendo products are back in the AC universe, with items like the Ultra Hand and Nintendo consoles adding some classic flair. NSO members can play select classic titles in-game when interacting with specific console items.
- A collaboration with LEGO brings new furniture and clothing.
- Certain The Legend of Zelda and Splatoon series amiibo can be used to invite special visitors and unlock various items inspired by each series.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ Nintendo Switch 2 Edition (an upgrade is also available) and 3.0 update will both be released on January 15, 2026. The game is currently available for Nintendo Switch.
