Sea Fantasy open world RPG announced, this is an early screenshot

Japanese developer METASLA has announced Sea Fantasy for both PCs and consoles. It won’t be out until early 2025, but we’ve immediately added it to our “to watch” list, because it looks like a wonderful modern take on the classic Legend of the River King concept.

It is an open world chill-back RPG with a firm focus on fishing… or is it? On the surface it looks like the epitome of tranquility. You’ll see a shadow in a pond or other body of water, whip out that fishing rod and BAM!, catch yourself a big dinner treat (or in this case a pile of materials that you strip from the caught fish).

But there’s more to it than that, and it’s more like Rune Factory but fishing than it is Harvest Moon but fishing (yes, I know both those series have fishing, but you know what I mean). Sea Fantasy has dungeon delving, and we’re promised an “Epic Story” with the “destruction of the world imminent”. We’ve never had one of those stories in a JRPG before!

Sarcasm aside, Sea Fantasy really is looking wonderful and hopefully it can deliver on its promise. In the meantime, we’ll just have to enjoy the trailer!
