The key art for Monolith: Requiem of the Ancients.

RPGs are RPGs, so common, but stick one in what’s described as a “mystical world” and you’ve got my attention. Monolith: Requiem of the Ancients has players journeying across Gliese, a mystical world threatened by dark forces. A mysterious presence will help you during the adventure you’re about to take with the Runic Swarm in your hands. Become the planet’s saviour by crushing the minions of evil in this vibrant action RPG.

Take on the role of Astor, a young Diodek engaged in a fight for his world’s survival. He’ll have to unearth the secrets of the past to move forward. On his quest to stop an unholy ritual, he’ll learn new abilities, gain magical powers, and collect legendary weapons. His journey will take him down a path of discovery towards who he is and his true purpose as he solves the mysterious disappearance of the ancients thousands of years ago.

There are two realms in this game. The world of Gliese has majestic landscapes, mysterious ruins, and ancient temples to discover along with secrets left behind by an ancient civilization. In the spirit realm, the echoes of the past linger. This realm grants passage to inaccessible locations, and may contain answers when it comes to how to save the future.

Battles are intense and fast-paced. Players can switch between equipped weapons at any time – even mid-combo – to deliver critical hits. Defeat your enemies with a combination of melee strikes, ranged attacks, and air combos, or summon powerful constructs. Collect orbs to unlock new techniques, skills, and combos to prepare for future armies and brutal bosses.

I mentioned the Runic Swarm. It’s an arcane energy used to materialize Monolithic Constructs as weapons or tools. Summon companions, shields, and decoys to gain the upper hand in combat. It also allows for charged attacks that create devastating finishers with names like the Wall Crush and Runic Coffin.

Developed by C2 Game Studio and published by Versus Evil, Monolith: Requiem of the Ancients will be released for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series, and Xbox One. No release date has been announced.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
