Yes, once again the Playstation Network will be down for an entire day (that being today) for “maintenance”.
This time it’s not as severe as the last scheduled outage, since you’ll still be able to play online… or will you? I challenge you -dear reader- to decipher… THIS:
Fortunately, most online play will be unaffected. Users who are already signed into their account on PlayStation Network before the start of the maintenance should be able to stay signed in to their online session, but will not be able to access any of the services listed above. Users who attempt to sign-in to their PlayStation Network account after the start of the maintenance may be presented with the site maintenance notification page if they haven’t signed in recently. – from the Playstation Blog
So, you’ll be able to play online… unless you can’t? Am I reading that right? At least you can still collect Trophy’s; they’ll post to your account once the ‘maintenance’ is complete. Here’s a full list of all the stuff that you definitely won’t have access to-
- PlayStation Store on PS3, PSP, and Media Go
- PlayStation Network Account Management
- PlayStation Network Account Registration
- PlayStation HomeMusic Unlimited & Video Unlimited services
- You will not be able to sign in to PlayStation Network from us.playstation.com (or the PlayStation.Blog).
This latest adventure in PSN land will be an all day affair, lasting from 6am through midnight (Pacific time). You’ve gotta love the fact that Sony never bothers to really tell it’s users why they take the PSN offline. Some people pay for this stuff you know!
It is annoying, especially as I had planned to go online with a friend today, I also agree that they should really say what they are doing 'maintenance' on.

I got my PS Plus free Final Fantasy V in time. So I don't mind not having the PSN for a day or two 😉

LoveFilm and Netflix have also been down as a result of this maintenance. I pay £9.99 a month for the former and only watch streamed movies on my PS3 because I'd rather watch them on a TV than PC. Why the hell are they dependent on the PSN servers anyway?
Hi Walker,
It's a good question. I can't think of a good reason why third party services should be affected if the PSN is under maintenance :-/
