There’s an interesting article over at [a]listdaily featuring an interview with THQ CEO, Brian Farrell, in which he expresses being a fan of cloud gaming, and how it can benefit consumer and developer/ publisher alike.
“You might primarily play a game on your PC, yet play subgames on your phone then share stats and improve your progress in the main game,” Farrell said in the interview. “Technology alone will not give a clear benefit to the consumer. Cloud computing and data storage could potentially do a lot, but it’s what we do with it as game designers and publishers that really matters most.”
Consoles will be cheaper with the removal of disc drives (in theory anyway), publishers will find themselves better resourced when they’re not struggling with retail mark downs and the second hand market, which in turn means they can funnel money back into game development and quality control.
Cloud gaming also makes alternative (and popular) sales models to flourish, from freemium through to episodic and subscription-based gaming.
And it allows better cross-platform experience. As mentioned in the comment above, cloud gaming allows people to play the main game at home, and then minigames that link into the main game on the mobile phone on the go, for instance.
