Developer Autumn Knight has announced that Encryptid, a short horror FMV game, will launch in February 2027. The game is set in the ’90s, and you find a strange camera that once belonged to a cryptozoologist. The camera footage proves that the cryptozoologist successfully located nearby cryptids, but the last few entries might reveal the cryptozoologist’s fate. The footage was recorded entirely with the Game Boy Camera.
Cryptids are iconic creatures of myth and folklore. They exist in all cultures. Some examples include Mothman, the Loch Ness Monster, and Bigfoot (and its many variations).
Encryptid is inspired by iconic monster-taming games from the mid-’90s through the ’00s. As I mentioned, it features photographs and full-motion video recorded via the Game Boy Camera. Using this footage and other available resources, discover what happened to the cryptozoologist by identifying, locating, hunting, and catching cryptids.
Here are the game’s key features, via its Steam page:
- Creepy, authentic Game Boy-inspired visuals and audio
- Live-action footage filmed on 1998’s most iconic digital camera
- Research, encounter and capture iconic cryptids
- Multiple endings to unlock
- Cryptid horror inspired by urban myth both real and digital
- It’s actually a Game Boy game
- Does not require $1000 of RAM to run
The game is designed to be played on PC, the original Game Boy, and any device able to emulate Game Boy titles.
Developed and self-published by Autumn Knight, Encryptid will be released for PC via Steam/itch.io. The Game Boy ROM will also be available through these platforms.
