During today’s Nintendo Direct, Square Enix announced the first HD-2D game in the Final Fantasy series, Final Fantasy Resonance. The game is based on the first story arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, a mobile title from 2016. It’s not just a port, as it has been refined and extensively rebuilt as a console-quality RPG experience. The game will launch for PC and consoles this October.

Crystals and Final Fantasy go together like peanut butter and chocolate, so it only makes sense that the story of Final Fantasy Resonance revolves around crystals. It features a turn-based battle system with a modern twist, and features the return of chocobos, espers and airships, in addition to appearances from beloved such as Cloud, Tidus and the Warrior of Light.

Here are the game’s key features, via Square Enix:

  • Cinematic Pixel Art – What if Final Fantasy had continued to push the limits of pixel art? The first Final Fantasy to join the HD‑2D lineup, Final Fantasy Resonance delivers a visually striking experience that feels both nostalgic and new, enhanced by dynamic camera angles and pixelized 3D models that make every moment more dramatic and immersive.
  • A Return to the Familiar – A classic RPG adventure unfolds in a world filled with beloved FINAL FANTASY elements—airships, crystals, espers and moogles woven into the fabric of the story, and so much more.
  • Strategic Turn-Based Battles – Exploit enemy weaknesses to stagger them—breaking their defenses to seize extra turns and gain the upper hand with powerful Resonance attacks in cinematic battles shaped by smart choices.
  • Final Fantasy Legends – Bolster your team with Visions, echoes of beloved Final Fantasy characters, who fight alongside you with unique skills and abilities for deep party customization.
  • Hours of Side Content to Discover – The world is full of secrets, including the wandering swordmaster Gilgamesh, a Colosseum with deadly monsters and rewards to match, the Chamber of Arms with formidable foes sealed within legendary weapons, and a showdown with Ultima Weapon.

The Standard Edition includes a copy of the game, a pre-order bonus of the Magitek Airship & Squire Starter Pack, and an early purchase bonus of the Squire Kickstart Pack. The Digital Deluxe Edition includes a copy of the game, the Magitek & Grimoire Deluxe Pack, a pre-order bonus of the Magitek Airship & Squire Starter Pack, and an early purchase bonus of the Squire Kickstart Pack.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
