It seems to take a lifetime for the Trails games to make their way from Japan to the West, even though it’s truthfully less than a couple of years. Delays don’t help, though! The Legend of Heroes: Trails beyond the Horizon follows this pattern; it was originally released in Japan in September 2024. Today, NIS America announced a January 2026 release date for the game, accompanied by a new trailer titled Unprecedented Mission.

Here is a description of the game from Western publisher NIS America:

Van Arkride and the members of Arkride Solutions are back, and this time the future of the entire Zemurian continent is at stake! The people of Zemuria await the launch of humanity’s first foray into space with bated breath. A sudden invitation from Marduk to cooperate in a high-tech training exercise sets Van, Ashen Chevalier Rean Schwarzer, and Father Kevin Graham on a collision course with the secrets at the very core of Zemuria.

Their paths may diverge, but the ultimate question remains the same: Just what lies beyond the edge of the horizon?

Some of the characters seen in this game come from previous Trails titles, including Kevin, the Grail Knight from The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky; Rean, the Ashen Chevalier from The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel; and Rufus from The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie.

Developed by Nihon Falcom Corporation and published in the West by NIS America, The Legend of Heroes: Trails beyond the Horizon will be released in the West for PC via Steam/Epic/GOG, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Switch 2, and Switch on January 15, 2026.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
