RGG Studio and SEGA have revealed a new trailer for Stranger Than Heaven, a 50-year action-adventure saga. The game follows men with nowhere to go, desperate to find homes. Use violence to survive and music to thrive across five cities and eras of modern Japan. The new trailer showcases one of those cities/eras: 1929 Kure, Hiroshima.
The story begins in 1915 San Francisco, when a young boy named Makoto Daito sneaks aboard a mysterious ship. He was born to an American father and a Japanese mother (both are now dead), and he faces harsh persecution for his Asian heritage. He decides to travel to his mother’s birthday, seeking acceptance.
Fighting to survive means doing whatever it takes. (Cue the theme music for Degrassi: The Next Generation.) You will control Makoto’s left and right sides independently in battle, attacking and blocking to stay alive. It’s not all violence, though: Makoto is a talented musician and finds himself as a showman, producing a variety of acts throughout Japan.
Here are the five eras/city combinations in the game, via SEGA:
- 1915, Kokura, Fukuoka – Home of what was said to be one of the world’s largest foundries, a smoke-scorched town bursting with the passion of hard-driven, equally fiery workers.
- 1929, Kure, Hiroshima – A port town dominated by Japan’s largest naval arsenal and heavily influenced by the presence of yakuza organizations.
- 1943, Minami, Osaka – The biggest entertainment district in western Japan, set against the ever-rising tension of a world at war.
- 1951, Atami, Shizuoka – A bustling seaside getaway synonymous with tourism in postwar Japan.
- 1965, Shinjuku, Tokyo – Japan’s most iconic pleasure district—a city of swirling and unpredictable chaos.
Developed by RGG Studio and published by SEGA, Stranger Than Heaven will be released for PC via Steam/Microsoft, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series on January 15.
