Capcom has revealed a new story trailer for the swordplay action game Onimusha: Way of the Sword; it focuses on the supernatural events leading up to the dark fantasy of Miyamoto Musashi’s story. It also introduces new characters, who play key roles. The game was announced at The Game Awards 2024 and will be released next year for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
When samurai (and protagonist) Miyamoto Musashi arrives in Kyoto, he’s ambushed by the demonic Genma. While on the verge of death, he is “gifted” a gauntlet that grants him the power to stand against the monstrosities from the underworld. However, he is a warrior who wishes to pave his own path, and he attempts to sever ties with the mystical artifact.
Musashi meets two new friends, Izumo no Okuni and Ono no Takamura, based on real Japanese historical figures. The voice within his gauntlet leads him to Takamura, a venerable swordsman with a gauntlet of his own. He also meets Okuni, a famous performer known for her iconic Kabuki dance; however, she’s left the stage in search of a way to defeat the Genma. Today’s trailer also features some gameplay footage of Musashi facing off against enemies in the streets of Kyoto.

Here is a description of the game, via Capcom:
Onimusha is rooted in the Sengoku period, Japan’s legendary age of warring states. The games infuse history with Japanese folklore to tell tales of warriors who wield the mystical power of the Oni. These heroes are drawn into conflict with the Genma, relentless monsters hellbent on conquering the world. The franchise debuted in 2001 and instantly captivated players with its satisfying sword-based combat and exhilarating “Issen” counterattack mechanics. The series also gained recognition for its spellbinding stories portraying historical figures and real events in a dark fantasy setting. Now, having grown in popularity as one of Capcom’s best-selling properties, Onimusha is entering a whole new era.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword takes place in Kyoto during the early Edo period. In this time of relative peace for Japan, Malice has befallen the ancient city. Twisted into an eerie and unsettling place, Kyoto has been infested by the demonic Genma. In the debut trailer for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, a lone samurai armed with the Oni Gauntlet engages in fierce, blood-soaked sword fights with these hellish creatures from another world.<.i>
Developed and published by Capcom, Onimusha: Way of the Sword will be released for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series in 2026.
