The key art for Cassette Beasts.

I sure am tired of comparing creature-collecting games to Pokémon, but most seem to be inspired by it. Cassette Beasts is no different: it’s got a very Pokémon-esque quality to it, but then turns that around with something new – creature-fusing! There are over 100 monsters to collect and transform into during turn-based battles on a journey of exploration and friendship. The interesting part is that you use cassette tapes (think VHS) to transform into these creatures during battle! The game is now available for PC, and launching for consoles in about a month.

Residents of Harbourtown (on the remote island of New Wirral) are under the constant threat of monsters, but the good news is that they can fight fire with fire by recording a variety of creatures then playing them back in battle to take on their forms. The story is an otherworldly adventure with spooky twists and turns. Who are the Archangels? How did you end up on New Wirral anyway? And how can you find your way home?

Players will have to explore the island and record any monster they may come across to gain their abilities. These monsters can also be merged together, creating unique fusions with shared elemental types, stats, and move sets. There are literally thousands of creature combinations to discover and experiment with. Use elemental chemistry to apply advantageous buffs or debuffs with attacks, or even to alter the opponent’s elemental type.

Some monster abilities can be used in human form to get around, solve puzzles, and more. Players will glide, fly, swim, climb, dash, and turn magnetic in the colourful land. And they’ll never fight alone after forging bonds with their partners and helping them complete personal goals to become a better team. The strength of these relationships dictates how well you’re able to fuse.

PC players can team up via local multiplayer and Steam Remote Play Together for up to two players. PC users (and only PC users) also get to customize the experience with mods, as the developer is dedicated to fostering community creativity and involvement; the game has a flexible modding system for players who purchase from either Steam or the Microsoft Store.

Developed by Bytten Studio and published by Raw Fury, Cassette Beasts is now available for PC via Steam/Microsoft. It will be released for Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series, and Xbox One on May 25.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).

  • “…cassette tapes (think VHS)”. For some reason, I find that line hilarious. Maybe it’s time to admit that I’m too old and obsolete…much like cassettes themselves…for Digitally Downloaded.

    • Naw, we forever love the old-school approach to media. VHS, cassette, vinyl, even CD. Those were the days! Preserving stuff was much easier when you could have it on your shelf, that’s for sure.
