Children of Silentown is quite gorgeous (and intriguing), launches early next year

Cute *and* spooky!

The key art for Children of Silentown, featuring the logo, a handful of glowy-eyed silouettes, and a town.

I don’t remember a ton about Children of the Corn, but I do remember two things. One, it scared the living daylights out of me (I was way too young). Two, children with glowy eyes will forever relate back to it. Honestly though, thr glowing eyes seem to be where the resemblances between the film and the upcoming game Children of Silentown ends. Described as a dark adventure game, it’s been announced that the title will be released early in the new year.

Children of Silentown is a hand-drawn point-and-click adventure game by the creators of Little Briar Rose with help from another studio, whose game this appears to be the first. The aesthetics are completely different (Little Briar Rose features stained glass-style graphics) but the trust from Elf Games is already there when it comes to phenomenal narrative experiences.

Like any child, Lucy is afraid of the forest. Unlike any child, the echoing roars from it keep her awake at night. She can’t even dream safely. And when it comes to safety, well, her village is certainly lacking in it. People disappearing is a completely normal occurrence. Lucy decides she’s old enough to investigate on her own, but she’s not necessarily right.

Explore Silentown for hints, but do not enter the forest. There are many quirky characters and animals, but interact with them (nicely) quickly before the disappear. Music is really important, and Lucy will need to sing to help her out in times of need. Combine items to obtain unexpected results, and play minigames with other children in the village.

The unique art style is meant to feel unsettling, matching with the tone of the narrative. There are also puzzles described as “curious” and “original;” things like using a leash and shears to break into your Lucy’s mother’s friend’s house to steal a single flower.

Developed by Elf Games and Luna2 Studio – and published by Daedalic Entertainment – Children of Silentown will be released for PC via Steam/Epic/GOG, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series, and Xbox One on January 11, 2023.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).

  • Is it supposed to resemble children of the corn? Or why did you start with that reference? Also, I’m pretty sure there were no flowing eyes in children of the corn. Maybe you’re thinking about village of the damned. 🙂
