Cyberpunk Edgerunners

Netflix has shared the debut teaser and key image for the forthcoming Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime, and announced that it will premiere in September 2022.

The Netflix original series is a partnership between CD Projekt Red and Trigger, an animation company. It takes place in the same interpretation of Cyberpunk as Cyberpunk 2077 (hence the CD Projekt Red involvement).

The trailer shows the main protagonists in action with Maelstrom, a group that appears in both the Cyberpunk tabletop RPG and the video game. The trailer offers an intriguing glimpse into Cyberpunk Edgerunners’ aesthetics and key characters, as well as an insight into just how adult this show will be pitching.

The announcement was posted on Day Three of the New Netflix Geeked Week of 2022. According to Bartosz Sztybor, one of the series’ producers, the creative team intended to keep the game’s approach to plot while adding “bombastic” aesthetics to further broaden the appeal of the property.

Furthermore, executive producer and showrunner, Rafal Jaki, stated that the anime series would like to tackle the kinds of themes and narratives that wouldn’t have really fit within the game.

Edgerunners is a 10-episode solo series about a street boy attempting to live in a futuristic metropolis, and who is fascinated with technology and bodily alteration. He resolves to live by becoming an “Edgerunner”: a mercenary and criminal with nothing to lose and everything to gain.
