24 Games Of Christmas! Day #20: Wingspan

2 mins read

As has become an annual tradition at DDNet, we are here to help you count down towards Christmas! One new game every day for the 24 days from December 1 to Christmas Eve. Think of it as a kind of Advent Calendar, if you will, giving you new tips and ideas for games to pick up and play at that rare time of year where everyone does have a little more time to indulge their favourite hobbies.

Also, it’s an excuse to post pictures of cute anime girls in Christmas gear every day. I won’t deny that we love doing that too.

Day #20: Wingspan
Wingspan released right at the end of last year, and it hasn’t really left the gaming rotation ever since. Through the long months of social distancing and secondary lockdowns here in Australia, Wingspan became a weekly family gaming event… and then I made sure I got plenty of single-player practice in at other times because when you get into it, Wingspan is brutally competitive.

It helps that the presentation of the game is so gorgeous, with beautifully animated cards and richly detailed backgrounds. One of the goals of Wingspan was to encourage people to develop a deeper appreciation and understanding of birds, and while it doesn’t lecture and is highly abstracted, you do certainly find yourself walking away from many, many hours of play knowing something that you didn’t before. Wingspan is one of the board game revelations in recent years, and the video game adaptation is every bit as good.
