Aokana – Four Rhythms Across the Blue makes its way to Nintendo Switch this week, and it’s an excellent port of an excellent VN.

One thing that is notable about the game’s console port is that it has lost the adult scenes that were a big feature of the PC release. Of course, the developer had no choice there as the console platform holders are never going to allow adult games on their devices, but does this mean Aokana is an inferior game as a result? What about all the other adult games that have been similarly edited for console release?

In this video, I discuss the narrative and thematic implications of removing adult scenes for console releases. There’s more nuance to this discussion than we really see, so hopefully this helps introduce a broader perspective.

Do let me know your own thoughts, and thank you as always for tuning in!
