Video by Matt S.

PLEASE NOTE: BECAUSE THIS IS AN IN-DEPTH LOOK INTO THE GAME’S THEMES, THERE ARE SPOILERS! I know this is an old game, but as it is a new release, it’s possible that there are people out there that will use this release to play FFVIII for the first time. I would hate to be responsible for spoiling the experience, but at the same time there is no way I could talk about this without the spoilers.

Final Fantasy VIII is not just a great game (and it really is a great game). It’s also a brilliant narrative experience, and in this video, I take a look at some of the philosophical underpinnings of it. It’s a dense, intelligent, brilliant example of how video games – and the JRPG genre – can tell a story.

Of course, the Final Fantasy that appeals to you the most will be the one with the narrative and themes that you enjoy the most. For me, the story that FFVIII spins makes it my favourite – or at least right up there in the top 2-3.
