Trailer: The live-action adaptation of Attack on Titan looks good

Attack on Titan has become a major media franchise, with both the manga and anime lighting up sales charts worldwide.

So the natural next step was a live-action film, and this one is shaping up well indeed, based on the early trailer, which you can see below.

Of course, manga-to-film adaptations have had a checkered history at best, thanks to the incompatible narrative structure interests. A film needs to progress rapidly through a set three act structure to a satisfying conclusion within two or three hours. A manga, meanwhile, wants people to keep reading (and thus keep buying more issues), and so plots tend to be more open-ended and filled with regular cliffhangers.

There’s also a question about how the film is going to handle the extreme violence and horror of the material when, one presumes, it won’t be targeting an adults-only rating. Certainly the material in the anime would be adults-only if it was in live action, so hopefully the director has worked out how to handle that material without compromising the vision.

Anyway, all that aside, enjoy the trailer! Who knows when, or if, this will come to Australia.
